Music Find: Sofar Sounds

Calling All Music Lovers! This Is The Listening Experience For You!

We feel pretty lucky to have stumbled upon this unique and secret gem of an experience. Being the music lovers that we are, naturally, we had to share. Sofar Sounds is unlike any traditional concert or music experience we have ever partaken in. Sofar manages to create an incredibly intimate and raw experience for its listeners. If you appreciate musical talent then a Sofar show is for you! Expect to cozy up next to other music loving strangers. Expect to fall in love with an artist or band you have never heard of. And expect to feel hopeful that you make the list for the next month's show. So here are the details.

What is Sofar Sounds?

Sofar Sounds curates secret, intimate gigs in living rooms around the world. They spotlight amazing emerging artists, introducing them to new and passionate fans through a unique and magical concert experience.

As new chapters are starting all around the world, Sofar Sounds has become a global movement that is bringing music lovers together. From Dallas and Austin, to New York and Los Angeles to Paris to Barcelona, Sofar is currently putting on shows featuring local artists in over 80 cities and 37 countries. To see if you have a Sofar chapter in your city, visit the Sofar website or Facebook page

The Sofar Experience

Recalling our first time, we were complete newbies with no idea of what SoFar was or what to expect. We had been invited to attend by someone on the guest list as their +1. There was quite a bit of suspense leading up to the day of the show. By way of email, all you are told is a date, time and zip code. The actual address of the event is revealed later in a second email, a day or two before the show. The 3 - 5 band line up goes undisclosed; a surprise upon arrival for all the guests. (We have now been to several shows and we still love the mystery component of the event. Sofar has yet to disappoint.)

Needless to say, the venue is never the same. Sofar relies on generous, music loving people opening their homes or spaces for their secret shows. Many times the show is held in someone's living room. Other venues have been at the Nylo hotel, BMW Mini Cooper show room and Wild Detectives book store. Guest list is limited, as is space. So sign up and show up early to get first dibs on the best seats. Everyone in attendance is there for the music. It is a friendly, some times warm, and always respectful experience for all involved. The usual Sofar line up consists of local, upcoming talent. However, they can also include artists from their global music community that happen to be passing through town on tour.

Want to see your favorite band before they hit it big? Then Sofar is the place! Check out their website and YouTube channel to spot artists like Hozier and Bastille right before they hit it big. If enticed enough and you want your own Sofar experience, all you have to do is signup on their website. You'll receive all their show dates in an email, every month. Guest lists are growing and they can only extend invitations to a lucky few, so don't wait!
